Catholic Memes on Twitter

These memes come from the Twitter page @CatholicMemes. The sample is narrowed down to focus only on Catholic memes about the Easter and Lenten season. The strategies of repackaging and imitation of well-known memes are the most common methods used in constructing these memes - this can be seen in my example given at the top of the commonly seen “brace yourself” meme repackaged to include a message about Lent and the Easter season. There is no stock image used in all the memes, but instead a variety of well-known images rebranded with a Catholic message. Some examples of repackaging are seen with the Toy Story meme, the Success Kid meme, and the Futurama Fry meme.

The memes in this sample most often get their message across by making references to popular culture such as the movies Frozen and Napoleon Dynamite. Since they do not utilize one stock character background, the memes rely heavily on text to get their point across and to eventually increase virality.
