Priests no longer needed in Antarctica due to online religion

This summer in Antarctica, fewer priests will be present. Since 1957, The Christchurch diocese has been sending five priests each summer to McMurdo to work out of the base’s Chapel of Snows. The America’s National Science Foundation recently told Christchurch’s New Zealand Catholic Diocese that they would no longer need local priests on the ice due to better communications and Internet connections. With better technology, people now feel less isolated while working in Antarctica. Now people can even watch sermons online and have ways to stay connected. This is a huge shift because 30 years ago the only form of long distance communication was ham radio or every few months a short two-minute phone call.
