Young Tajiks Marrying Online

Video chats are becoming a common way for Tajiks to get married due to many Tajikistan citizens working abroad. A woman named Shahnoza Idrisova recently got married via online video chat service because her groom was working in Tunisia as a translator. Now a quarter of Tajikistan’s citizens are living and working abroad which creates hardships for these long distance relationships. Idrisova decided to get married online because her father would not allow her to move and be with her groom until she was married. They currently do not have a statistic on how many people are getting married online, however after speaking to five different couples, they learned that this is becoming more common especially in rural areas. Tajikistan is predominately Muslim and a major source of cheap migrant labor across Asia, which makes sense why these younger couples are taking full advantage of advanced technology. Skype is becoming a popular way for young couples to keep in touch as well as conduct wedding ceremonies.
