Maryland nuns use social media to help connect with others

Every year, a few hundred young women decide to take the journey into a life of service and devotion to the Catholic faith. This is referred to as a calling, with many people having questions about what it is and how current nuns had made that decision. The number of nuns in Maryland has decreased since 1998, going from 1,300 nuns to now close to 900 nuns in 2014. Across the state of Maryland, many religious organizations are trying to revamp their vocation practices to encourage more women to become a nun. Using social media has helped many nuns reach younger women and help answer any questions that they have about it. An example is a young woman who needed to pay off her college debt so that she could fulfill her dream of becoming a nun. A gofundme page was setup to reach out to others so that they could help her pay off her debt. Another great example is a woman who created a website that grew into a roadshow to help other religious organizations connect with social media. This has allowed them to be able to educate people and come together.
