Call for Papers on Media, Religion and Public Scholarship

This special issue in the Journal of Religion, Media and Digital Culture will feature key papers and works presented at the 11th biennial conference of the International Society for Media, Religion, and Culture (ISMRC), which explored the relationship between media, religion and public scholarship. This call for papers welcomes research work presented at the conference, as well as related articles that explore topics and address in some way the intersections between media, religion and public scholarship.

The papers should in some way follow one of the following themes:

 Religion and mediatized public life
 Media, ethics and public scholarship
 Public scholarship, gender/race and religion
 Religion, media and politics/public policy
 Media, religion and authority
 Religious conflict, media representation and public opinion/public policy
 Journalism and public religion
 Free speech, religion and public scholarship
 Hate speech, religion and public scholarship
 Religious audiences and public scholarship
 Public religiosity: spirituality in popular culture
 Theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of religion, media and public
scholarship
 Digital religion, global and transnational trends

They invite extended abstracts of 500-750 words to be submitted for consideration. Abstracts
should clearly state the overall argument and/or research question of the article, theoretical ideas
or concepts being engaged, research methods used and a brief summary of findings. Abstracts
should also address how articles will engage with the special issue and conference theme of
media, religion and public scholarship. Articles based on presentations made at the ISMRC
conference will be given preferential treatment.

Full research papers articles of up to 7,000 words (including all references and citations), will be
invited in November 2018. Full and final drafts of papers will be due by 15 February 2019.

Full submissions will undergo a standard blind peer review assessment before being included in
this special issue.
