Heidi Ann Campbell, Texas A&M University, Presiding
Saturday - 1:00 PM-3:30 PM

Sheraton Boston-Public Garden (Fifth Level)

This panel showcases findings and work of a three year interdisciplinary research seminar at Texas A&M University exploring themes of religious identity and authority through the lens of media, religion and culture studies. By bringing together established and new scholars to this area of scholarly inquiry from unique disciplinary backgrounds --such as Architecture, African Studies, Library Science & English--enabled a unique multi-disciplinary conversation on the shared themes of religious identity and authority. This panel highlights both the individual research studies of seminar participants and the learning gained during this interdisciplinary experiment. By exploring ancient Gregorian Chanting and contemporary Jewish humor, the practices of cyberworshppers and framings of Islam on the big screen , this panel tackles questions of how theory, method, context from various discipline can contribute new understandings to the religious media performances and the (re)defining of religious identity, authority and community.
