I'm in the final year of my PhD which explores public and private British Muslim identities and the ways in which those identities are activated within Facebook Groups. I'm interested in challenging the traditional public/private binary approach in matters of identity and exploring the ways in which both identities and virtual environments can alternatively or simultaneously function in public and private ways. Related to this is my interest in expanding notions of the political in light of the uses to which Facebook Groups are put by respondents, as well as respondents' own ideas of political activity and their fluctuating attitudes towards the political efficacy of such Groups.
